Meet Emma Walters, Clarinet Section Leader in the Saline High School Marching Band

 09/25/2017 - 23:44

Like the football team it supports, the Saline High School Marching Band is getting better with every performance.

There are 195 members of the band this year, conducted by Nate Lampman and drum majors Anna Loughman and Michael Lance. This year's show has a Latin theme.

Over the next few weeks, we will feature leaders in the band. Meet Emma Walters.

Name: Emma Walters

Parents: Brandy Righter and Matt Walters

Grade: 12

Instrument: Clarinet

Title in the band: Section Leader

Describe your job in the band: My job is to oversee the clarinet section and make sure that everyone looks and sounds the same. I act as Mr. Lampman’s eyes on the field, answering any questions people might have and fixing any problems I notice.

What was your reaction when you learned of your new role? I was really excited to hear that I had earned the role of section leader. I have always looked up to my section leaders in the past and was really excited to be that role model for other members. This year, the clarinet section is the largest in the band. It felt a little intimidating at first, to be the leader of such a large section, but overall, I was ready to take on this role.

What do you like most about Friday nights at Hornet Stadium? I love being at Hornet Stadium on Friday nights because of the atmosphere of the whole stadium. It’s so much fun to cheer on the football team with other people who also love doing what you do. There’s so much energy from the band, the students, and the community, and it’s so much fun to be a part of it all.

Who is the funniest player in band? Stuart Dobson

Do you have any Friday superstitions/routines? I wear the same pair of socks for every game

Other sports and extracurricular activities: I dance at Arts in Motion and am a part of the Company there.

Favorite subject in school: Government

Favorite ice cream: Butterfinger

Post high school plans: I would like to study political science in college and someday go to Law School. I hope to continue both dance and music in college.
