Saline's Debate Teams Flourish at State Tournaments

Gavin Yelsma, Hannah Fischer, Thereza Cevidanes and Austin Bellinger performed well for Saline at the Varsity State Debating Tournament.

The 2016-2017 Saline High School and Saline Middle School debate teams has experienced great success this season. The high school team won the Novice State Public Forum tournament on December 10 and earned second place in the Varsity State tournament on January 7. Additionally, the Middle School Debate Team, which commenced this school year, won first place in the Middle Level State tournament.

In the Varsity State tournament, debaters Austin Bellinger and Thereza Cevidanes advanced to semifinals with a 4-1 record before placing second in finals with a record of 5-2. Debaters Hannah Fischer and Gavin Yelsma also earned a 4-1 record, but did not advance to semifinals.

Additionally, the Saline Debate and Forensic Speech Programs were awarded on December 16 with Charter Status in the National Speech and Debate Association, the highest school membership honor offered. To become a charter member, they “demonstrated excellence in attaining new members and degrees in the Honor Society over the last three years.
