Saline took two from Bedford and improved to 3-0 in the SEC Red varsity baseball standings.

Saline won 8-0 and 5-3 at Saline High School Thursday to sweep the season series with their conference rivals.

Lance Blaszack pitched well in the opener, shutting out Bedford over five innings on one hit and three walks. He also struck out three. Ryan Steinhauer pitched two perfect innings for the Hornets.



Leadoff hitter Noah Nelson went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI and a run scored. Vinnie Patteri went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Paul Kiyabu, 2-for-4, and Alex Morrison, 3-for-4, also had multi-hit games. Cole Daniels, Brad Baldus and Jacob Ohren-Hoeft also had singles.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third went Patteri hit a screamer down the first base line in right field. He scored on a sacrifice bunt by Nelson. Saline added two more in the fifth. Baldus led with a single. Ohren-Hoeft bunted for a single. Baldus took third. Patteri laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Baldus. Nelson singled to left to score another run. Saline led 3-0.

The Hornets added five runs with seeing-eye hits, Bedford errors, some small ball and a couple sharp hits.



Patteri stroked a line single to center scoring one run. Nelson’s fly ball to deep right centerfield fell for a double and scored two more runs. Kiyabu’s infield single brought home Nelson. Daniels infield single scored Kiyabu.

Reliever Logan Evans earned the win in the night cap. He pitched four innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and no walks. Evans struck out six. Reagan Miller started and went three innings. He walked two, struck out five and gave up three hits and one earned run.

Nelson was the only Hornet with more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Morrison doubled and drove in a run. Evans singled and dove in a run. Ohren-Hoeft, Ethan Collick and Jack O’Keefe also singled.

Saline put Bedford on its heals with two runs in the first. Nelson singled to center and stole second. He scored on a single by Ohren-Hoeft. Collick kept the inning going with a line single to left. Morrison doubled to right to score Saline’s second run.

Bedford scored in the top of the third with a single, fielder’s choice and single. Miller got out of a bases loaded jam with a grounder to Ohren-Hoeft at second base.

In the bottom of the fourth Saline went up 3-1. O’Keefe led with an infield single. Baldus followed with a line drive single to rightfield. Logan Evans, replacing Miller on the mound, entered the game and hit an infield single to third, scoring O’Keefe. Saline left the bases loaded. Bedford added a run in the top of the sixth. Evans allowed a single and then hit a batter. He got the next batter to ground into a fielder’s choice. A single scored one run. Ohren Hoeft got the next batter to fly out and then struck out the next one to end the threat.

Saline scored two in the bottom of the inning. Patteri and Ohren-Hoeft walked. Collick reached base on an error by the leftfielder, scoring both Patteri and Ohren-Hoeft.

Bedford scored once in the top of the seventh. A second Mule reached base on an error, bringing the tying run to the plate. Evans struck him out to end the game.
