Despite a monster fourth quarter from sophomore Trevor Arico, Saline couldn't catch up with Bedford Friday evening.
Arico scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter but Bedford won, 55-51.
The Hornets dug themselves a small hole in the first quarter with turnovers and spotty shooting. Bedford led 14-9 after the first quarter.
Ethan Friedrichsen came off the bench and scored six points to keep the Hornets in range in the second quarter. Bedford led 24-19 at halftime.
Saline finally caught Bedford in the third quarter. The Hornets were down 26-20 when Emmett Turner scored from the paint. They got to within one with Turner and Griffin Yaklich (12 points) working a give-and-go that ended with a three from Yaklich. After a Bedford basket, Yaklich scored on a drive through the lane to put the Hornets within one, at 28-27.
With 2:44 to play in the quarter, Arico sliced through the defense to give Saline its first lead since early in the first quarter.
Bedford regained the lead, but Yaklich replied with another layup to make it 31-30, Saline.
After a by Zach Lewandowski, Heisler tied the game at 33 with a layup. The two teams began the fourth in a tie.
It seemed like Saline had the momentum, but Bedford quickly turned it around with two baskets.
After a basket by Arico, Dylan Blossom hit a three-pointer to give Bedford a 40-35 lead.
Arico replied with a three-pointer of his own with 4:51 to play, making it 40-38. With 3:33 to play, Heisler tied the game by putting back a second offensive rebound.
But to the Mules' credit, they remained composed. Lewandowski made a shot. Blossom, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, added five more points from the stripe to give Bedford a 47-40 lead with 1:03 to play.
But Arico was money from the stripe down the stretch. He made two shots with 50 seconds left. After a basket by Lewandowski, Peter Jacobsen hit a three-pointer to make it a four-point game with 25.5 seconds to play.
Saline got the ball back after Bedford went 1-for-2 from the line. Arico was fouled while trying an improbable underhand three-point jump shot. Arico made all three shots. Saline was within two points with 12.6 seconds to play.
Matt Kohler kept the pressure on the Hornets by making both free throw shots. Arico replied with another three pointer to get Saline within one at 52-51 with 3.5 seconds left.
The Hornets were out of timeouts, so Fosdick called the timeout and took the technical foul to stop the clock. Unfortunately for Saline, the Mules made their points, got the ball back, were fouled and scored again, to close out the game.
