Saline senior Maddy Murphy fires a shot under pressure at Skyline Tuesday.

Senior Maddy Murphy scored four goals as Saline defeated host Skyline 8-4 Tuesday night.

Jen Green and Gillian Cain also scored two goals apiece.

“It was an important win because it counts toward the seeding in the district tournament,” coach Katie Card Neidermire said. “The higher the seed, the easier the draw in the tournament.”

Murphy opened the scoring with a goal from the middle at 1:57 of the first quarter. Saline had all kinds of chances and hit goal posts and cross bars. At 5:28, Murphy scored again from the middle. Once again, Saline capitalized on a turnover and used a long pass to spring Murphy for a breakaway.

Defensively, gave up only one dangerous long shot in the first quarter.

At 3:49 of the second quarter, Green scored from the right side for a 3-0 lead.

By this point, Skyline was beginning to generate a counter attack. Steals by Cain and Sam Fitch helped the Hornets keep the Eagles off the board. But with 1:18 to play in the second, Maggie Stevens scored on a pretty passing play to put Skyline on the board. With one second left in the half, Miranda Stuart scored off the goal post to make it 3-2.

Saline began the second half with Murphy taking a pass from Fitch and scoring just 33 seconds into the third quarter.

With Fitch creating turnovers in one-on-one battles, Saline kept pressing for goals. But what Skyline’s goalie didn’t stop, the crossbar did.

With 2:30 remaining in the third, Skyline Stuart scored with a well-placed lob shot over the goalie Katie Wagner.

But instead of falling back, Saline took over the game. Just 11 seconds later, with an opponent’s hand in her face, Murphy scored a goal from the center slot.

Saline led 5-3.

“They know Maddy’s our top goal scorer so they dropped a second girl on her. She still found a way to score,” coach Neidermire said. “She’s our fastest swimmer and she has great endurance. And she won’t be outworked.”

The goal sparked a four-goal burst.  Less than 40 seconds later, Green scored after a long swim to make it 6-3. Only 17 seconds later, after turnover and pass, Cain swam in and scored from the right wing. She added another goal from the right side.

Saline led 8-3 after the third quarter.

Skyline scored the fourth quarter’s only goal.

The Saline Post 3 Stars

  1. Maddy Murphy – Whenever the Hornets needed a push, Murphy provided the goal. She scored four goals and played tough defense.
  2. Sam Fitch – Played in your face defense and just plain took the ball from her opponent. Together with Murphy and Lisa Gross, Fitch and the Saline defensive unit gave up very little.
  3. Jen Green and Gillian Cain – Each scored two goals for Saline.
