Connor Wright scored two goals and had an assist and Cody Stein posted his first varsity shutout as Saline defeated Jackson United, 6-0, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube Tuesday.
Playing in front of their favorite teachers on "teacher appreciation" night, the Hornets certainly made their mentors proud.
It took less than three minutes to get on the board. Liam McGregor forced a turnover with an aggressive keep at the blueline and got the puck to Aleks Lozovyy, who beat the Jackson goalie with quick wrist shot.
The fans barely had time to sit down before the Hornets made it 2-0. Lozovyy fired a shot on goal and Wright chipped a loose puck past the goalie. Saline took the 2-0 lead into the second period.
Early in the period, Jake Honan scored from the side of the goal to make it 3-0. Ben Wild and Joe Raupp drew the assist. Wright made it 4-0 with a beautiful goal. Speeding up the center of the ice, Wright ran into a throng of Jackson defenders. Wright skated into the crowd and somehow came out alone, in front of the goalie. Wright slammed the puck underneath the goalie for the shorthanded tally.
The Hornets spent a lot of the third period on the penalty kill. It didn't seem to bother them. Saline made it 5-0 when Josh Peitz banged home a Wright rebound for a shorthanded goal. Joe Raupp scored Saline's sixth goal from the slot with 1:44 to play.
The Saline Post's 3 Stars
1) Connor Wright - The co-captain was all over the ice creating chances and backhecking hard. His goal will go down as one of the most spectacular individual plays of the season.
2) Cody Stein - The Hornet goalie continues to impress. He wasn't busy - especially in the first period. But Stein was tested with two five-on-three situations in the third and he held his ground to post his first career shutout.
3) Aleks Lozovyy - Opened the scoring with a laser and then assisted on the second goal. The lanky and skilled forward plays a lot like his older brother.
