Saline Boys U12 Baseball Team wins the State Championships this Weekend

 06/29/2016 - 18:34

26 teams from all over the State headed to Canton, MI to compete for the AA State Tournament championship this past weekend. With tons of talent on the dozen fields at Canton Sports Center, Saline earned their status of State Champs with 6 wins, 0 losses.

“I want to congratulate and thank our boys, coaches and parents. This weekend really was amazing. Our boys came together and really just outplayed everyone that got in their way. As usual, we played great defense, pitched well and kept the bats hitting. This weekend we've never hit better. Anytime we needed runs all 11 guys from our team were contributing. It really was fun to watch and I feel so lucky have been a part of this whole experience,” said Coach Andy Gottfried.

Gottfried started this team 5 years ago with 11 talented young 8-year-old boys. With time, patience and strong coaching he turned these boys into a desirable team that can win with grace and learn from losses.

“We've been working very hard over the last 5 years to get this team where we are today. We've had our ups and downs and we have had to make some very difficult decisions to get to the group we have today. When you have a weekend like we just had... STATE CHAMPS... it makes all the hard work, stress and obsessing about the team worth it,” added Gottfried.

Worth noting about the tournament: Saline outscored their opponents 57 to 14, resulting in 5 mercies out of 6 games.

The championship game (8-0) was against Michigan Storm from Southgate. USSSA awarded the Saline Hornets U12 team with gold state championship rings for all the players and coaches. Michigan Storm received silver runner-up rings.

The 12U Saline Hornets have been selected to play in the Cooperstown Dream Park and American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament during the week of July 15 - 21 in Cooperstown, NY.
