After winning their opening match, the Lady Hornets state championship hopes were dashed by host Hudsonville Saturday morning.

Hudsonville, the eventual state champ, scored three first period goals and never looked back.

Cassie Anderson scored twice and Lisa Gross, Gillian Cain and Jen Green also scored for Saline.

Saline faced Okemos in the battle for third place. The game was a rematch of the regional final won by Saline in overtime. Saline lost 8-6.

The Hornets played without goalie Katie Wagner, who took a ball to the face in the Hudsonville contest. Senior Lisa Gross stepped in for the Hornets.

Maddy Murphy and Jen Green each scored twice. Gillian Cain and Cassie Anderson also scored for Saline. Cain had six steals for the Hornets.

Anderson and Murphy were named First Team All-State. Sam Fitch earned Honorable Mention.

Saline finished the season with a 26-5 record and district and regional championship trophies.

They finished fourth in the Michigan Water Polo Association Tournament.
