Spears, Luther Lead Saline to Victory Over West Ottawa

Just a few days after defeating Skyline in an SEC dual meet, the Saline swim and dive team defeated another state powerhouse. Maddie Luther and Lizzy Spears each won two events pacing Saline to a 111 to 75 victory over West Holland Ottawa Saturday afternoon at Saline High School.

Luther won the 100 freestyle and 200 IM and Spears won the 100 fly and 100 breast stroke. Maddy Murphy won the 100 yard backstroke and Johanna Jorgenson won the 50 freestyle. Saline also captured two of three relays.

The meet opened with Luther, Spears, Jorgenson and Lisa Gross winning the 200 yard medley in 1:50.18 – just .18 seconds faster than the West Ottawa team.

West Ottawa’s Caroline Sisson won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.31. Saline’s Sydney Kermath was second in 2:00.29 and Sarah Burchart was fourth in 2:02.69.

Luther won the 200 IM in 2:10.76. Murphy placed second in 2:18.06 and Emily Laing was fourth in 2:25.14. Madeline Robison was fifth in 2:27.02.

Jorgenson won a great race in the 50. She completed the race in 24.6 seconds, .19 seconds faster than West Ottawa’s Ayisha Afrik. Lisa Gross was fourth in 25.63.

West Ottawa’s Ema VonHoltz won the diving with a score of 262.65. Saline’s Sarah Densham was second in 196.25. Paige Gidley was fourth (163) and Emily Marvin was fifth (157).

Spears won the 100 fly in 57.52. Paige Wilson was third (1:02.45), Burchart was fourth (1:05.48) and Gross was fifth (1:05.84). Luther won the 100 free in 53;06. Lang was third (55.94) and Kermath was fifth (56.5).

Sisson won the 500 in 5:07.29 for West Ottawa. Jorgenson was second in 5:16.46 to earn her state cut. Kelsey Robinson was fourth (5:32) and Robison was fifth (5:37.31).

Saline won another relay in the 200-yard freestyle. Luther, Burchart, Laing and Gross won in 1:41.61.

Maddy Murphy won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.56. Cassie Anderson was third in 1:03.25 and Riley Jones was fourth in 1:05.34.

Spears won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.96. Emma Loveland was second in 1:10.22. Lauryn Kruse was third (1:12.79) and Emily Klemptner was fourth (1:13.68).

West Ottawa won the 400 relay.
