Saline Area Schools have hired their largest incoming class of teachers in years. There are 13 new staff members in the school district this year. Over the next few weeks, we'll introduce you to them.
Today, we introduce you to Dean Garbarz
Name: Dean Garbarz
What/where you teach: I currently teach Quest at Pleasant Ridge Elementary.
Hometown: I grew up in Dearborn and now reside in South Lyon with my wife Sarah.
What university did you graduate from? I earned my Bachelors of Science Degree from Michigan State University in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and my teaching certification from Wayne State University.
What is your previous teaching or work experience? This is my eighth year teaching, seven and a half of them in elementary classrooms and one half year in middle school. I previously taught for six years in Detroit and one year in Dearborn.
Why did you decide on teaching as a profession? And why did you choose your specific subject/area? Teaching was actually my second career, as my first career was in the Parks, Recreation and Tourism field. I always loved working with kids and being around them, so with the encouragement of my sister, I pursued the teaching field. I chose to get my degree in elementary education because those were the grades in school I truly enjoyed the most, and I like providing students with their foundations in learning.
Describe a satisfying moment you have experienced as a teacher. Teaching creates many opportunities for satisfying moments. With my current students, some of the most satisfying moments occur when the students become so interested and invested in their education they personally push to take their learning to a higher level.
Who was your favorite teacher and why? I have liked many of the teachers I have had, however, my first inspiration to want to teach came from my third grade teacher, Mrs. Helner, who taught at Haigh Elementary in Dearborn. Not only did she challenge us yet was very kind and compassionate at the same time, Mrs. Helner also helped me overcome some pitfalls I had during that year of school.
What is something about you that might surprise your students? When I was growing up, I wanted to be a writer and also hoped to own my own business.
How do you like to spend your time away from class? I enjoy spending time with my wife and our families and enjoy watching movies, sports and being outdoors.
